I started with one state, added one or two until I was back up to the original conglomeration. I got the distortion only after adding the last state, and it was not the one that was distorted. Hmmmmm.... [18:13:53] So I split the original map into two, and set up a mapset (in navit.xml) that contains the two maps. This works.
