I tried eseapk but for french saying its a mess is a huge understatement, its not really usable. I saw gTTY which works perfectly, but has the huge drawback of requiring contant internet connection [15:59:18] [discord] How do I make Navit work on Ubuntu [16:20:54] [discord] Could you be a bit more explicit, which issue are you facing? [16:21:33] [discord] you could look into mbrola [16:21:49] [discord] I tried to install it on my Ubuntu machine but it just gave me a yellow screen [16:23:12] [discord] is it more efficient ? Im a bit skeptical about syllab based TTS engines... Maybe i can cache google's service for TTS and get it working that way offline 🤔 [16:23:18] [discord] is it more efficient ? Im a bit skeptical about syllab based TTS engines... Maybe i can cache google's service for TTS and get it working that way offline 🤔:baronfulConfused: [16:23:40] [discord] by more efficient, i mean better than espeak * [16:24:08] [discord] you need to download a map, configure it and then it should work, but on debian/ubuntu there's also a bug, that no layouts are preset with the base installation, you you need to download those files and put them next to you navit.xml. @Archen Von Dreknov had the same issue a few days ago: [16:24:39] [discord] yup agreed [16:24:40] [discord] here i described how to fix the layout file issue [16:25:27] [discord] as in "do they sound better", at least for german thy are do sound better [16:25:43] [discord] hmm i'll give it a shot [16:25:56] [discord] espeak is plain unusable [16:26:04] [discord] in english its fine, but french is a mess [16:26:22] [discord] i wouldnt mind english but its a different story for my parents [16:26:32] [discord] and well, it will be used by the whole familly lol [16:27:01] [discord] also i wonder, can we get traffic info live displayed on the map too ? [16:28:02] [discord] @jkoan [16:28:08] [discord] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/500190750085087235/859107911199621120/image0.jpg [16:28:14] [discord] Which one of these [16:28:16] [discord] take all of them [16:28:58] [discord] you only **need** one, and thy are visually different, so you can download all and chech which fits your needs [16:29:12] [discord] Do I just copy and paste it into navit.xml [16:29:43] [discord] no, they have to be separate files *next* to the navit.xml file [16:30:16] [discord] How do I know which one I need names aren’t really helpful [16:30:59] [discord] we told you, get all of them [16:31:12] [discord] then try them on navit and see which one you prefer [16:31:41] [discord] But where do I put them [16:31:51] [discord] . [16:32:06] [discord] They are already there [16:32:13] [discord] then thats it [16:32:14] [discord] ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ [16:32:52] [discord] But it still doesn’t eork [16:32:54] [discord] Work [16:33:26] [discord] did you get a map file too ? [16:34:10] [discord] What’s it’s name and where is it located [16:35:16] [discord] Wait when I download Navit it is under .navit right? [16:37:41] [discord] @luximo a different strategy: wheres you navit.xml file located and have you modified it in any way? [16:38:06] [discord] Well under Navit folder [16:38:20] [discord] which one [16:38:44] [discord] Normal one no dot [16:39:00] [discord] give the complete path name [16:39:11] [discord] /home/navit [16:39:30] [discord] And somewhere under there probably [16:39:37] [discord] it should be /home/username/.navit most of the time [16:40:00] [discord] In that folder I don’t have anything [16:40:38] [discord] then it might be why you have nothing displayed... [16:43:24] [discord] Well what files do I need to make it work [16:43:40] [discord] im not sure, im not too familiar with navit [16:52:21] [discord] @luximo simplified seeking you need a configuration and a map. The map contains the data to display (the data) and you need a configuration. The configuration shipped with Ubuntu has all the basics you need to run navit. Except for the layout files. [16:52:22] [discord] [16:52:23] [discord] To get started we do some simple things: [16:52:24] [discord] 1) Copy the map to ~/.navit/navit.xml [16:52:26] [discord] 2) Download a map file [16:52:27] [discord] 3) configure the map location within navit.xml [16:52:28] [discord] 4) fix the issue we with layouts: [16:52:29] [discord] 4a) download all layout files and put them into ~/.navit (next to navit.xml) [16:52:31] [discord] [16:52:32] [discord] Note: ~ stands for the users home directory and can be used as is within the shell [16:52:50] [discord] Now afk (lunch) but will be back soon to continue helping [17:00:09] [discord] I couldn’t find that XML file I only found C DTD and H files [17:01:05] [discord] thats the source code folder, not the navit usuable folder [17:01:42] [discord] Well where is that useable folder [17:02:03] [discord] we told you where it was... ~/.navit [17:02:18] [discord] That’s where I looked [17:02:29] [discord] There is no naxit.xml [17:02:35] [discord] There is no navit.xml [17:03:05] [discord] ``cp /etc/navit/navit.xml ~/.navit/ [17:03:05] [discord] `` [17:03:07] [discord] do that first [17:03:33] [discord] Where [17:03:41] [discord] in a terminal [17:07:11] [discord] What now [17:07:35] [discord] everything jkoan sai [17:07:39] [discord] everything jkoan said [17:08:00] [discord] Hi, I am back :) [17:08:25] [discord] So what map do I need to copy [17:08:42] [discord] well we cant tell you that lol [17:08:45] [discord] thats up to you [17:08:58] [discord] Well where can I choose [17:09:21] [discord] Navit layout ones or? [17:09:24] [discord] Yes, that's correct. Now you should have a copy of navit.xml within ~/.navit/navit.xml [17:10:44] [discord] No, the layout's are how the map data is displayed. Not what is displayed. What you need is the data. So you can choose from the following: [17:11:58] [discord] i'll admit the layout thing got me confused as well at first [17:13:17] [discord] https://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Maps so basically you want OpenStreeMap data whoich you can get from http://maps.navit-project.org [17:13:31] [discord] yes, this i currently really suboptimal [17:13:41] [discord] note that its kinda broken at the moment [17:13:48] [discord] some regions are not working [17:15:48] [discord] well its mostly the naming [17:16:05] [discord] at first i thought that layouts were responsible for the OSD [17:19:00] [discord] yes, it can be confusing and our doc at navit.readthedocs.io isn't really good as well, but we are working on this continuously. But help is always welcome 😉 [17:20:41] [discord] i'd gladly contribute [17:21:40] [discord] It keeps failing [17:21:44] [discord] The download [17:21:46] [discord] Of the map [17:24:02] [discord] to which url where you redirected? maps?.navit-project.org? [17:24:38] [discord] Maps9.navit-project.org [17:26:00] [discord] please try agin from 3 or 6 instead of 9, this could work. We are in the progress of repairing some things on our infrastructur [17:26:31] [discord] Wdym from 3 or 6 [17:26:36] [discord] Oh nvm [17:31:07] [discord] this would be really nice, do you need a direction where to get started? [17:31:37] [discord] yup, it would be nice, some todo stuff, and some how to contribute tutorial [17:31:51] [discord] im already familiar with github and C developpement [17:32:36] [discord] Ok It downloaded [17:32:37] [discord] idk to which extent i'll be able to help, as i already have two electronics projetcs on my hands (namely, this gps thing and an arduino based porject) but if i can help even on small things i'd be happy to [17:32:38] [discord] What now [17:33:06] [discord] there is a full tutorial online for that you know [17:33:53] [discord] we told you : edit navit.xml file in order for it to point to the location of the map file [17:34:30] [discord] Edit what part of it [17:35:02] [discord] From the List Point 3: You need to edit navit.xml. There you search fror "mapset" and configure one mapset with the location to your map (Note ~ is not possible here) [17:35:37] [discord] see https://navit.readthedocs.io/en/v0.5.6/maps.html 3.1.2 [18:34:53] [discord] <@!450016040315912196> is it working? [20:57:45] [discord] :baronfulWave: [22:05:29] [discord] Heads up on my TTS engine research. I have found a library called pico, which apparently is the old android TTS engine. It works a lot LOT better than espeak even when its combined with mbrola. [22:05:29] [discord] The only downside is that it produces a wav file instead of being able to output directly to stdout, meaning an extra step is needed to play the generated file, and potentially delete it after the fact to prevent filling up the storage with instructions
